Palahniuk: Rockwell perfect for 'Choke'

20 November 2008 12:36 AM, PST | From Digitalspy | See recent digitalspy news

Chuck Palahniuk has described Sam Rockwell as the "perfect" choice to lead the cast of his Choke adaptation. The Fight Club author said that he initially could not picture Rockwell playing sex addict Victor Mancine, but was surprised by how well the actor brought his literary creation to life. "Sam Rockwell's never really occurred to me as an actor," said Palahniuk. "Everything I've seen him in I've always just associated him so strongly with that character. (more)

Rockwell, Huston "couldn't stop hugging"

18 November 2008 10:24 PM, PST | From Digitalspy | See recent digitalspy news

Director Clark Gregg has revealed that his Choke stars Anjelica Huston and Sam Rockwell made an instant connection. Gregg told Digital Spy that he found it "bizarre" how quickly his two lead actors, who portray mother and son in the Chuck Palahniuk adaptation, became close. He said: "They really did, it was bizarre. We had Sam and Anjelica and Brad William Henke in Los Angeles for a couple of days to read the script and it was one of those rare (more)

Palahniuk: It was easy to hand over 'Choke'

18 November 2008 5:48 PM, PST | From Digitalspy | See recent digitalspy news

Chuck Palahniuk has revealed that he found it easy to hand over the Choke film rights to first-time director Clark Gregg. The Fight Club author said that he had no trepidation in letting Gregg adapt the book because he never expected the film version to go into production. He explained: "At the time [Clark] bought the option he had just gotten his first screenplay produced and that was What Lies Beneath. That turned out so well, and people were so impressed by it, that it was kind of easy to hand off and see what he would do with it. "Also part of you doesn't expect it will ever go into production. Ledger, Mirren almost cast in 'Choke'

17 November 2008 9:22 AM, PST | From Digitalspy | See recent digitalspy news

Chuck Palahniuk has revealed that Heath Ledger was almost cast in the movie adaptation of his novel Choke. Ledger, who died of an accidental drug overdose in January, was among the actors in line to play sex addict Victor Mancine in Clark Gregg's dark comedy before the role eventually went to Sam Rockwell. Palahniuk confessed that the actors who were circling the role prior to Rockwell's casting did not appeal to him. He said: "For a long time it was supposed to be Ryan Gosling, who I couldn't see, and for a brief period of time it was supposed to be Heath Ledger, which I wasn't sure about. And so in a way I think it's turned (more)

Francis Lawrence to Helm Prison Riot and Siege Movie

13 November 2008 8:18 AM, PST | From firstshowing.net | See recent FirstShowing.net news

With at least the I Am Legend prequel and an adaptation of Chuck Palahniuk's Survivor in the works, director Francis Lawrence already has an exciting slate of projects lined up. Add to that list a currently untitled prison riot project, an action thriller written by first timer Ari Rubin to eventually be directed by Lawrence. The concept is based on the real life story of the riots and siege of the Atlanta Federal Penitentiary in 1987. Cuban and American prisoners seized control of the maximum security facility and took more than 100 federal prison staff members hostage. The situation was so extreme that the FBI's hostage rescue team couldn't handle the riots and the Delta Force was called in to retake the prison. Warner Brothers has just picked up the rights to the packaged project after a bidding war. Michael De Luca (Zathura, Ghost Rider, 21, The Love Guru) will be ...

The Next Director To Tackle Palahniuk Is The Best Choice Yet …

21 October 2008 5:41 PM, PDT | From TwitchFilm.net | See recent Twitch news

Sorry, David Fincher, as much as I love your adaptation of Chuck Palahniuk’s Fight Club I’ve always thought your films were just a touch too slick for Palahniuk’s particular world.  And Clark Gregg?  Well, you got my favorite of Palahniuk’s novels and made one brilliant casting choice in Sam Rockwell but you just don;t have the required sense of style to really make it go. Lawrence Frank?  You’ve got a fighting chance of making a good film of Survivor but I don’t expect it to look much like the novel by the time you’re done.  But this? This is brilliant news.

The rights to bring Palahniuk’s Haunted to the big screen have just been purchased by Belgian director Koen Mortier, he of Ex Drummer fame, and if ever there was a perfect match of director and material this is it.  Ex Drummer

'Haunted' Film In Development

21 October 2008 5:21 PM, PDT | From Comicmix.com | See recent Comicmix news

Hollywood's favorite shock novelist Chuck Palahniuk is getting another movie adaptation in the form of Haunted. The book's film rights are being optioned with the newly formed New School Media, headed by former Icm literary agent Brian Levy. Koen Mortier, whose directorial debut Ex-Drummer premiered at least year's Toronto Film Festival, will direct the adaptation.

Variety describes Haunted as focusing on "a group of characters who answer an ad for a writers retreat and unwittingly end up competing in a Survivor-like scenario, where the host withholds heat, power and food. As the storytellers grow more desperate they ruthlessly plot to make themselves the hero of the reality show or film that they expect will be made from their plight."

It's strange to see Haunted getting the film treatment before other popular Palahniuk properties, namely Survivor, Lullaby and Invisible Monsters. Those novels are more story focused, whereas Haunted is essentially

Palahniuk's Haunted

21 October 2008 3:24 PM, PDT | From JoBlo.com | See recent JoBlo news

Author Chuck Palahniuk may not exactly write the most commercial material (Fight Club, Choke), but he certainly has a considerable fan base. In fact, that fan base (aka "The Cult") is usually the best source of any updates on his film adaptations, from the mouth of the fan-friendly and constantly touring novelist himself. But this one came from the trades for a change. Palahniuk's book Haunted is now getting the feature treatment, courtesy of new production company New School Media...

Chuck Palahniuk's 'Haunted' Gets Optioned

21 October 2008 1:40 PM, PDT | From Cinematical.com | See recent Cinematical news

Filed under: Drama, Thrillers, Deals, Scripts

While Choke hacks its way across theater screens, another Chuck Palahniuk novel is getting the spotlight. The Hollywood Reporter posts that Haunted has been optioned by New School Media. (Sweet! I might find use for those postcards from my forgotten days as a street team member after all!)

But don't expect anything of Pitt proportions. Belgian director Koen Mortier has signed on to adapt and direct the film, which will only be the director's third feature (after last year's Ex Drummer and the upcoming 22nd of May). While Mortier might be able to knock this out of the park, I think chances are good that this will be another on-screen adaptation that fails to live up to the fervor incited by Fight Club. But the content is certainly interesting.

Chuck Palahniuk Haunts Us Still

21 October 2008 8:41 AM, PDT | From cinemablend.com | See recent Cinema Blend news

The latest adaptation of a Chuck Palahniuk novel, Choke, wasn't exactly the massive success that Fight Club was, but that isn't stopping brave producers from trying to turn the provocative author's work into movies worth watching. Brand-new production company New School Media, according to The Hollywood Reporter, has acquired the rights to Palahniuk's novel Haunted, which he wrote in 2005. The book, which has been honestly compared to The Canterbury Tales, is about a group of writers who go on a retreat that's intended to bring them inspiration, but actually makes them desperate as they run out of food and water and start targeting each other. 23 stories make up the novel, as each writer narrates their own story that somehow relates to the horror going on around them. Reviewers called it "Palahniuk's grisliest book yet" and noted "there is something here to appall almost every sensibility." I'm sure there are some

Palahniuk’s ‘Haunted’ to come to big screen?

20 October 2008 8:30 PM, PDT | From screeninglog.com | See recent screeninglog news

Variety today reported Brian Levy is trying to acquire the rights to Chuck Palahniuk’s novel “Haunted” via New School Media, his new production house.

Palahniuk’s book centers on a group of people sign up to be part of a writers retreat but eventually find themselves in the middle of a “Survivor”-like competition.

Koen Mortier is set to pen the adaptation and direct the project.

This is obviously not the first time a Palahniuk book will be heading to the big screen. His “Fight Club” and “Choke” have already made the jump, with “Invisible Monsters” and “Survivor” currently in early development.

I actually haven’t read any of his books, but I really enjoyed the recently released “Choke.” Any of you guys read “Haunted”? Let me know what you think!

Koen Mortier Directing Chuck Palahniuk's Haunted

New School is Haunted

20 October 2008 3:34 PM, PDT | From DreadCentral.com | See recent Dread Central news

Books-to-film is a far more acceptable action via a studio than a remake. Think about how many good books (no, not Twilight) are sitting out there just waiting for a creative team to bring them to life! Oh, the never ending pain we must endure!

Satan heard our cries and so it came to be that Fight Club Chuck Palahniuk's own unique style of horror storytelling, Haunted (review), will be making its way to the big screen thanks to a newly formed production company, New School Media.

Variety is reporting the adaptation's pick up about a group of high school kids confined in a reality show-like game where "the host withholds heat, power and food. As the storytellers grow more desperate they ruthlessly plot to make themselves the hero of the reality show or film that they expect will be made from their plight."

Cast and crew have yet to be announced.

20 October 2008 1:56 PM, PDT | From Reelzchannel.com | See recent ReelzChannel news

Chuck Palahniuk's novel Haunted has been optioned by Brian Levy's New School Media. The project will be adapted for the screen and directed by Koen Mortier (Ex Drummer, A Hard Day's Work).

Two of Palahniuk's nine novels have made the transition from page to screen (Fight Club, Choke), but box office success has eluded the cult author's screen adaptations thus far.

Haunted follows the story of a group of characters who answer an ad for a writer's retreat and unwittingly wind up playing a forced game of Survivor.
